88 GUAVA SEEDZ, also known as 88 BALAZ, started playing out over ten years ago with local legends LTK and the Clippers who they would take influence from combining western rock forms of punk, blues and rock 'n' roll along with Taiwan style Taike. Over the years they have played countless festivals, parties and live house gigs, winning the yearly Ho-Hai-Yan battle of the bands in 2001 along the way and always presenting everyday concert goers with surprise stage acrobatics. Their first albumThe 44 Stone Lions, released by local indie supporters Taiwan Colors Music, has been wildly anticipated among Taiwan music fans of all types.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:Being packed packed with their fusion of punk, blues and Taike (or Taiwan rock), 88 GUAVA SEEDZ's first album does not disappoint those who have been waiting so long for this landmark album. With guitarist Ah-Chang's acoustic preference, "Brocooli" begins the set on a bright and natural tone that immediately gets roughed up by the Iggy Pop style wailing and Stooges-esque dirty groove on Clockpeople. The psychedelic hooks that whirl beneath Ah-Chang's strained vocals and the driving force of the rhythm remind you that this 88 BALAZ are unique punk fusion only found on Taiwan. For the purists, "Sweet Pickle" is a straightforward old school punk ditty in the fashion of THE DICKIES or THE RAMONES. With genre bending surprises throughout, The 44 Stone Lions promises to be a musical adventure that could only come from Taiwan. |
