Having formed in 1997, NIPPLES are probably Taiwan's first experimental post-rock group. Their energetic approach to experimental rock and the presence of female bassist KK has earned them comparisons to SONIC YOUTH, yet the laid back, improvisational nature of the music shows that they have much in common with MOGWAI who they shared the stage with in 2004 at the Autumn Tiger Festival. NIPPLES had also been active in a campaign for better public broadcasting on the island before their break-up in 2005. More recently, some members have formed a similar post-rock project called APHASIA.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:The second release by Taiwan's exceptional post rock outfit NIPPLES proves to be a milestone in Taiwan indie music history. Right from the start Sorry bursts forth with "CITY," a driving and edgy post-punk track with KK's vocals breaking out from beneath the noise at intervals. "Highway Movie" consists of various structured movements originating in noise and finding some way to rock, then resting in a final softness. "Revolving Door" is a SONIC YOUTH-esque alternative song which is followed by "Straight to the End," the only song which resembles a pop song with its clear melodic hooks and grinding dissonant guitar chords. The following tracks are destructured post-rock reminiscent of MOGWAI, meaning it would take too long to describe them here, especially while they are meant for the listener to interpret. Needless to say, this NIPPLES album is well worth looking into for fan of experimental indie, post-rock and post-punk. |
