About the Band

THE SAVAS

Having a classic Japanese punk sound influenced by the likes of THE STAR CLUB and blending in shades of pub rock and Irish punk, THE SAVAS were one of the most fun bands on the People’s Records roster. They often joined the punk rock caravan alongside compatriots DOUBLE NEGATIVE, PELOTAN and BUBBLELOVELE for tours of China and Taiwan.

BIKE

After honing their version of Taiwan-ized alt-rock, BIKE cut an EP on the local Taiwan indie label Gamaa Music. Around the same time, the Japanese label People’s Records was branching out into the Taiwan scene and decided to release a split CD featuring BIKE and Japanese punks THE SAVAS symbolizing unity between the two countries’ music scenes. BIKE was also one of the local headliners at a recent People’s Records event in Taiwan.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:

This split CD represents a great collaboration between two fast growing Asian music scenes being brought together by labels like People’s Records daring to cross borders. First off is a classic Japanese punk rave provided by THE SAVAS. Having a vintage J-punk sound akin to THE STAR CLUB and THE COLTS, they color their songs with Irish sounding mandolin and keyboard musings, pub rock cheers and even a little ballroom, albeit rowdy, swing!

The Taiwanese indie group BIKE then comes in and gives us an edgier alt-rock sound than their previous recordings with ska tones and CLASH style rhythms. The tonal melodies of Taiwanese and Chinese meld intricately with BIKE’s local flavored indie rock giving us a fresh sound, as opposed to the usual post-rock, pop punk and indie pop found on the island. Unifying two great eastern scenes, this split is a milestone in independent Asian music history.
