One of Taiwan's first indie pop groups, the name BAD DAUGHTER suggests a frustration with being young female musicians in a conservative environment. Well, they are not completely a girl band anyway, but their presence in the scene has probably influenced other young women to pick up guitars. Sweet crescendoing indie rock, folky at times yet new wavy at others, the music is held together by Vera Queen's charm and charisma. While the band broke up in 2005, Vera Queen has gone solo appearing on the recent Grass Fest 2007 compilation.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:The second album by Taiwan's first indie pop group now has status as a classic among the Taipei underground scene. Lead by the charm of Vera Queen's vocals and charismatic songwriting, the album's synth-powered pop intro is followed by a more mellow indie wave tune. A truly sweet moment comes when "我有我的小太陽," or "Now I have my Tiny Sun" rolls off a lulling arpeggio with punctuated rhythms and keyboard articulations that eventually crescendo to a soft distortion. "對就是對" is an upbeat pop tune with cute keyboard sounds while "農夫好辛苦" is a complete turnaround to a backyard acoustic jam. The instrumental "Cherry Bomb," a kind of theme song for the band, heats things up just before the final song's night-time theme burns out the album as Vera Queen chants " If you want the star, I will see the star." |
