nanoX The CLIMAX JOYSTAX Ex-BOY PACIFICTION REVIEW:Exploding like multi-colored Space Invader pixels amidst a vast matrix of post-punk, new wave and Japanese electro-quirk, the four retro 80's bands from Tokyo's neo-wave scene featured on this collection are ready to kill the radio star over again. Blasting off the set with hyperactive organ jolts, jagged guitar attacks and manic vocals, NANOX's first track, "Almost Strange," brings DEVO to mind. The following song, "Ready to Jab" continues this comparison with even more frantic synth sounds and catchy choruses. "GAME BOYS" is more epic, as if it were a soundtrack to a video game, but with the usual hypnotic repetition replaced by unexpected experimentation. The CLIMAX offer several driving new wave/punk ditties. The charging beat of "CLIINEX" expels feelings of disappointment while "Space Radio One," an homage to indie radio, stands out for it's catchy hooks and fun melodies. "Waste Time" contains the classic punk themes and energy. Bringing on a little disco-punk, JOYSTAX is guitar groove heavy with a GANG OF FOUR influenced sound. "Shout It Out!" makes uses of some Mod revival riffs and bluesy freak outs. "Decide All" is straight-forward dance-able and "Distant Cause" has a faster pace. The most retro sounding group on the collection, Ex-BOY makes bouncy, effects layered, space age songs. With its reverbed guitars and echo-y hiccuping vocals, "Give Me Water" sounds something like "space-o-billy." Most popular 80's new wave songs do not contain such meditation as "Boy From China." Closing the set with kind of a DURAN DURAN new wave ballad is "Fake Tears." With these four diverse bands, all invoking styles of the underground and mainstream 80's, Neo Wave Nastros is just waiting to be spun at college dance parties, enjoyed by 80's nostalgists and discovered by Japanese indie rock fans. |
