Specializing in the er-hu, often referred to the Chinese violin for its use in Chinese traditional music, Taiwanese American musician and composer Jack Hsu sought to apply the instrument to contemporary genres of rock, metal and progressive. In late 2005, he teamed up with several honed musicians who would help him achieve his goal in forming the Asian fusion group THE HSU-NAMI. Ever since, the waves can be felt crashing around the NYC area and breaking further with the 2007 release Entering The Mandala.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:Jack Hsu's erhu-powered fusion rock band known for blending traditional and modern musical styles as well as multicultural Asian themes soars to new heights on their second release. "Snake Skin Shuffle" with its driving hard rock beat and metal styling contrast nicely with more introspective, oriental compositions like "Temple Song." Also included is a hyper and adventurous rendition of the theme song of the popular anime series Jubei-Chan: The Ninja Girl. While "Moonlight" is a relaxing jazzy piece that evolves into a delicate bossa nova, the more upbeat "Luxy NYE" has a boogie vibe. Jack Hsu also explores his roots with his opus "Passport To Taiwan," a dedication to his native country as well as a celebration of Taiwanese culture around the world. Whether you are a metal guitar fan, oriental folk enthusiast or anime music otaku, then the The Four Noble Truths is sure to be a pleasing find. |
