About the Band

SHORTY CAT

Since forming in 2003, SHORTY CAT have succeeded in becoming the longest running Korean Punk girl band appearing on a Skunk Label compilation and releasing a full length album. If you peal off the layers of cool kitty cuteness, you will find a band dedicated to punk ethos influenced by 70’s punk women like JOAN JETT, Oi! street sounds and riot grrl. In 2004 the band played alongside their male counterparts at the Japan/Korea Oi! Festival. More recently SHORTY CAT joined Benten Label's Wacky Wild Party celebrating the 18th anniversary of LOLITA NO.18. More recently, bassist Phoebe has been touring with her new art punk band THE RANCE.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:

Never mind the punk rock, here comes the cuteness! No, actually it's the best combination of cute girl punk and sing along anthems you could ever imagine! These fourteen confrontational tracks from four Korean girls making headway into a male dominated punk scene will have you pogo-ing around the room, bashing your hand on the dashboard or bouncing your head until it rolls off, depending on where you spin the disc. "I'm Never Crush" is an uppity motivational ditty with a catchy "Hey Ho, Hey Ho" chorus. "Let's Go Sunnyday" is a punk rock walk through the park, while "Smart Boy" is a sarcastic jibe at punk boys through a girl's lens: "I Don't care about you!" The screaming on "I'm not gonna Make It" is enough to leave any fan of girl bands in a bliss. "Turn On My Music" is another song proclaiming the importance tuning in; similar to "Rock 'N' Roll Radio" by THE RAMONES and "Radio Hits" by BLANKS '77. The grinding "Feminine," followed up by "Wake Up," are charging anthems for grrl punks. "Just Say Go" is a perfect end statement to this album, proclaiming no fear for their destiny. With influences ranging from JOAN JETT to BIKINI KILL, and sounding very much like a young Benten band, SHORTY CAT is ready to have you purring and pogo-ing all night!
