Riding the psychobilly bandwagon jump-started by the likes of TIGER ARMY and taking influence from the leather jacket Jet Rock 'n' Roll of GUITAR WOLF, Korea's ROCK TIGERS have gained a cult following at home while raising eyebrows across Asia. With pinup knockout Velvet Geena as the group's spellbinding center piece, THE ROCK TIGERS were invited to the 2004 Tokyo Big Rumble in Japan. After two notable albums, they recorded Rock 'n' Roll Licence and continue to host their own Kimchibilly Nights which showcase a wide array of subcultural acts and have captured the interest of rockabilly fanatics the world over!

PACIFICTION REVIEW:After two successful cult albums and years of hosting subcultural Kimchi Billy Nights in the Korean underground scene, THE ROCK TIGERS sure have earned it. Their "Licence" to rock 'n' roll, that is! The group has shed much of their punk hooks for more roots rockabilly, hot rod and exotica on their latest effort. The sultry Velvet Geena gives a fiery delivery on songs like "Kimchibilly" and "Cry Baby." The campy "Zombie Night" is a jumpy, hiccuping drive through a B-movie. Several numbers like the eerie "2a.m." and "He Was Mine" notable for their masterful slide guitar, take on a more hypnotic CRAMPS vibe while the ultra cool "Cats On The Street" is an homage to THE STRAY CATS. And yet hearing these vintage sounds with Korean vocals is actually a pleasure as they often add an even more haunting atmosphere, and on the songs with English lyrics, Geena's pronunciation is clear as Rocky Mountain spring water. This milestone in Asian rockabilly history is a call for all Teddy boys and greasers around the world to up and get their own Rock 'n' Roll Licence! |
