This Tokyo band combines elements of spoken word, poetry, and avant rock invoking the odd No Wave sound of MARS and SONIC YOUTH, yet the smooth flow of the music and the innate soul of Azuma, a true Tokyo poet, keep them rooted in the Beat Generation of yesteryear. Indeed, Azuma has spoken his ninhongo poems in various NYC poet haunts several years ago. Together with FLIGHT OF IDEA his words become alive, charged and often humorous even if you cannot follow Japanese worth a dime.

TRACK LIST:
PACIFICTION REVIEW:Mapped out like a chapbook of poems, Talk Hard opens with hypnotic double bass and odd percussion sounds with sporadic spoken words by Tokyo poet Azuma invoking Beat antics and jazz improvisation. The following three tracks make up the whole of one of Azuma's more spiritually infused poems, each track melding into the next with No Wave tact and experimental fluidity. "Demo Tango" gives us hand claps and finger snaps sounding almost like rain blended with bongos... strange rhythms colliding that somehow make sense under Azuma's mumbled lyrics. At moments sounding like the popular pseudo jazz and poetry rock group MORPHINE yet completely diverging from structure under the influence of No Wave groups like MARS and SONIC YOUTH, FLIGHT OF IDEA is a wonder among modern spoken word/music projects even more so being that their interpretations are coming from a Tokyo backdrop. |
